First Day: Cusco – Ollantaytambo – Km 104 – Machupicchu – Aguas Calientes Town

Get ready for the adventure of a lifetime! Your Short Inca Trail 2 Day trek starts with an early morning pick-up from your hotel in Cusco, followed by a scenic drive to Ollantaytambo. From here, you’ll board the train that will take you to the starting from where the Inca Trail begins at Km 104 (approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes).

Upon arrival at the trailhead, your expert guide will welcome you and introduce you to the wonders of the Short Inca Trail. Your hike begins at Chachabamba, an important archaeological site tucked deep within the jungle and nestled at an altitude of 2,170 meters (7,120 feet). Surrounded by lush tropical vegetation, this site offers a glimpse into the rich history of the Inca civilization. After exploring Chachabamba, you’ll begin your ascent along the carefully maintained Inca Trail, where the adventure truly begins.

As you hike through dense forest and pristine landscapes, you’ll encounter stunning vistas, abundant wildlife, and a sense of peace that only the Inca Trail can offer. The trail leads you to the iconic Wiñaywayna archaeological site, located at 2,650 meters (8,700 feet). Wiñaywayna, meaning “forever young,” was once a vibrant center of agriculture, religion, and residential life for the Incas. Your guide will take you on a tour of this ancient site, sharing the fascinating history behind its terraces, temples, and sacred spaces.

Next, you’ll stop for a delicious local boxed lunch at the nearby campsite of Wiñaywayna, where you’ll see other trekkers who have embarked on the longer Classic Inca Trail. Here, you’ll take a well-deserved break before continuing your journey.

The path from Wiñaywayna is an easier section known as the “Inca Flat,” which will lead you through more lush tropical forest as you approach the legendary Intipunku (Sun Gate) at 2,720 meters (8,923 feet). The Sun Gate is the perfect spot to take in your first panoramic view of Machu Picchu – a sight that will leave you speechless. From here, the trail takes you down to the postcard-worthy views of Machu Picchu itself, where you’ll walk along the circuit 1 route, soaking in the incredible scenery of this modern wonder of the world.

Afterward, you’ll descend to Aguas Calientes (2,040 meters / 6,700 feet) by bus, where you’ll check in to a comfortable hotel for the night. You can relax and recharge after your exhilarating day. For dinner, enjoy a tasty meal at one of the many excellent restaurants in Aguas Calientes.

For those looking to unwind, there’s an option to visit the local hot springs – a perfect way to soothe your muscles after a day of hiking. Don’t forget to bring your swimwear if you want to experience this relaxing activity before settling in for a restful night.

As the sun rises over the ancient citadel, you’ll witness a truly magical moment, the morning mist unveiling the breathtaking beauty of Machu Picchu, a sight that will remain etched in your memory forever.

Your adventure starts with a guided tour along Circuit 3, designed to give you a deep and immersive experience of this UNESCO World Heritage Site.
