Today, we embrace a gentler pace, perfect for immersing yourself in the stunning natural beauty and cultural richness of the Lares Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. After a nourishing breakfast, we’ll begin our descent along a picturesque, narrow valley, following the Paracancha River for approximately 5 hours. This day offers countless opportunities to connect with the heart of the Andes as we pass through the historic Quechua village of Willoq (3,200 m/10,498 ft).

Explore the Timeless Culture of Willoq

Willoq is one of the oldest and most vibrant communities along the Lares trek to Machu Picchu. Here, locals continue to wear traditional clothing and proudly maintain their ancestral customs, providing travelers with a unique window into the past. The villagers, affectionately known as ‘Huayruros,’ take their name from the striking red and black huayruro seed, which symbolizes prosperity and is reflected in the vibrant colors of their ponchos.

As we journey through Willoq, you’ll witness firsthand the remarkable artistry of their renowned traditional weavings. These intricate textiles are not just beautiful; they tell the story of Quechua life, with designs inspired by the natural surroundings, daily routines, and deep-rooted cultural beliefs. You’ll have the chance to admire and, if you wish, purchase these high-quality weavings as a keepsake of this unforgettable experience.

Arriving at Ollantaytambo: A Living Inca City

Our trek continues downhill until we reach the majestic town of Ollantaytambo, a true gem of the Sacred Valley. Ollantaytambo, often called the “Living Inca City,” showcases the brilliance of Inca engineering and urban design. As you wander through its cobblestone streets, you’ll encounter ancient water channels and foundations of original Inca houses that remain standing to this day.

Spending the night in this historic town is like stepping back in time, surrounded by the spirit of the Inca civilization. This unique opportunity allows you to connect deeply with the heritage of the Andes, setting the stage for the grand finale of your adventure: the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu.

Day 4: Train Station- Km 104 – Sun Gate – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes Town

After spending three awe-inspiring days immersed in Andean culture and landscapes, we entered the lush upper Amazon and began the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, a highlight of this once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

A Magical Morning in the Andes

The day began early, with a hearty breakfast to energize us for the adventure ahead. Our journey started at the train station, where a scenic 1-hour 10-minute ride brought us to km 104, the starting point of the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Along the way, we marveled at the breathtaking views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, a landscape filled with terraced hillsides, ancient ruins, and the vibrant hues of Andean flora.

Our first stop was the archaeological site of Chachabamba (2,170 m / 7,120 ft), an ancient ceremonial center nestled in a temperate microclimate. This hidden treasure set the tone for the day’s exploration, with its intricate stonework and tranquil surroundings offering a glimpse into the engineering brilliance of the Incas.

Hiking Through History and Nature

From Chachabamba, we began a three-hour uphill hike along the well-preserved Inca Trail, surrounded by the lush greenery of the cloud forest. The effort was richly rewarded as we reached the stunning ruins of Wiñaywayna, also known as “Forever Young” or “Mini Machu Picchu.” This extraordinary site, with its cascading terraces and perfectly aligned stone structures, exemplifies the ingenuity of sixteenth-century Inca architecture.

Wiñaywayna is a peaceful oasis hidden among the forest canopy, offering hikers a unique sense of connection to the past. Here, we paused to enjoy a boxed lunch prepared by our talented chef, taking in the views of this remarkable location while savoring a well-deserved meal.

The Final Ascent: Reaching the Sun Gate

After lunch, we embarked on an easier section of the trail, passing through the dense vegetation of the cloud forest. The anticipation built as we approached the iconic Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the gateway to Machu Picchu. As we stepped through this historic threshold, we were greeted by a breathtaking panoramic view of Machu Picchu, bathed in the soft light of the late afternoon. The sense of achievement and awe was overwhelming, as we stood gazing at one of the most iconic landmarks in the world.

The Dream Fulfilled: Arriving at Machu Picchu

A short descent brought us to the main viewpoint of Machu Picchu, where we paused to capture the quintessential photographs of this Peruvian emblem. The sheer scale and beauty of the ancient citadel left us speechless, fulfilling a dream that had been years in the making.

FAQ

The Lares Inca Trail is a spectacular trekking route leading to Machu Picchu that offers an alternative to the famous Classic Inca Trail. Unlike its more crowded counterpart, the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu takes you through remote Andean villages, where you can interact with locals who maintain their traditional way of life. Along the way, you’ll pass dazzling turquoise lakes, majestic snow-capped peaks, and lush valleys, creating a sense of connection to the pristine beauty of the Andes.

This trail is perfect for those seeking a quieter, more intimate trek while still enjoying the splendor of Machu Picchu at the end of the journey.

The Lares Inca Trail takes 5 Days that offers an unforgettable adventure through the heart of the Peruvian Andes, culminating in a visit to the awe-inspiring Machu Picchu. This carefully designed itinerary combines cultural immersion, breathtaking landscapes, and the thrill of trekking in one of the most iconic regions in the world.

The journey typically spans five incredible days, each packed with unique experiences. The first three days are spent hiking through the serene and picturesque Lares region, renowned for its stunning mountain scenery, shimmering glacial lakes, and vibrant local villages. This portion of the trail allows you to connect with Andean culture, as you encounter communities that have preserved their traditional way of life for generations.

On the fourth day, the adventure transitions from the Lares region to the Short Inca Trail. After a scenic train ride to km 104, you’ll hike a section of the iconic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Along the way, you’ll pass through archaeological wonders such as Wiñay Wayna, marvel at ancient stone pathways, and take in breathtaking views of the cloud forest.

That evening, you’ll stay in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), the gateway to Machu Picchu, where you can rest and reflect on the journey so far. On the fifth and final day, the experience reaches its pinnacle with a guided tour of Machu Picchu, where you’ll explore the intricate stone structures, mysterious terraces, and sacred temples of this world-renowned Inca citadel. After soaking in the majesty of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll return to Cusco, carrying memories to last a lifetime.

The Lares Inca Trail 5 Days is categorized as a moderate to challenging trek due to its high-altitude terrain and daily hikes of 6–8 hours that covers a total distance of 44 Km / 28 Miles. While the trail does not require technical climbing skills, the combination of steep ascents and elevations reaching over 4,600 meters (15,091 feet) can be physically demanding. Proper acclimatization and a moderate level of fitness are highly recommended for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

One of the major advantages of the Lares Trek is that it does not require the same highly sought-after permits as the Classic Inca Trail, making it a more accessible and flexible option for adventurers. This allows you to enjoy a breathtaking journey through the Andes without the need for months of advanced planning.

However, if your itinerary includes the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu as is in this case, a permit will be required for that section, along with an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu. While these are generally more flexible, availability can still be limited during peak trekking seasons, typically from May to September.

To secure your spot on this incredible trek, it’s best to book your tour at least a month in advance. Early reservations give you peace of mind and ensure you don’t miss out on the opportunity to experience the majestic landscapes and cultural richness of the Lares + Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Take the first step toward this unforgettable adventure by planning ahead!

The Lares Trek offers a serene and culturally enriching alternative to the Classic Inca Trail, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a quieter, more immersive journey. While the Classic Inca Trail follows the ancient stone pathways built by the Incas, culminating at the iconic Sun Gate and leading directly to Machu Picchu, the Lares Trek focuses on exploring remote Andean communities, breathtaking natural landscapes, and less-traveled routes.

This distinct experience allows for meaningful interactions with local villagers who maintain their traditional lifestyles, offering a glimpse into the authentic Andean culture. Along the way, you’ll pass vibrant alpine meadows, glistening lakes, and towering snow-capped peaks, creating a truly unforgettable connection to nature.

Our specially designed itinerary combines the best of both worlds. After immersing yourself in the tranquil beauty and rich culture of the Lares Trek, the adventure continues with a journey along the Short Inca Trail, which connects you to the final stretch of the Classic Inca Trail. This seamless transition ensures you can enjoy the famous approach to Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate, just as travelers on the Classic Inca Trail do.

By blending cultural immersion, serene landscapes, and the iconic Sun Gate entrance, the Lares Inca Trail 5 days extension offers a perfect balance of tranquility, adventure, and awe-inspiring history, ensuring a truly memorable journey to Machu Picchu.

Packing strategically for the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu ensures a comfortable and enjoyable experience. Essentials include:

  • Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots
  • Warm layers for chilly nights in the highlands
  • Rain gear, as weather can change quickly
  • A hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses for protection against the Andean sun
  • A reusable water bottle or hydration system
  • Personal medications and a basic first-aid kit
  • A lightweight sleeping bag suited for cold temperatures

Most Lares Inca Trail tour packages include everything you need for a seamless adventure:

  • Professional bilingual guides passionate about sharing Peru’s history and culture.
  • Quality camping equipment, including tents, sleeping mats, and dining setups.
  • Hearty meals prepared fresh by the trekking staff to keep you energized.
  • Mules and porters to carry your gear, so you can focus on the journey.
  • Transportation, including a train ride to and from Aguas Calientes.
  • Short Inca Trail permit, entrance tickets to Machu Picchu and Lares

While the Lares Inca Trail is celebrated for its breathtaking landscapes and cultural immersion, it’s important to note that facilities along the route are basic. During the first few days of the trek, campsites provide tents for sleeping, and there may be simple, shared toilet facilities. However, showers are generally unavailable in these remote locations, adding to the raw, untouched charm of the journey.

The good news is that by the final night, you’ll arrive in Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Pueblo), where you’ll enjoy the comfort of a hotel stay with modern amenities, including hot showers. This transition from rustic campsites to a cozy hotel offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the simplicity and authenticity of the trek, making the reward of comfort even more meaningful.

Yes, altitude sickness can affect travelers hiking the Lares Trek to Machu Picchu, especially at higher elevations. To minimize risks, acclimatize in Cusco or the Sacred Valley for 2–3 days before starting the trek. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol, and go at your own pace during the hike.

Expect to be impressed by the delicious meals served on the Lares Inca Trail. From hearty soups and fresh vegetables to traditional Peruvian dishes like quinoa and trout, meals are thoughtfully prepared to provide energy and comfort. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary preferences can often be accommodated with advance notice.

Safety is a top priority for reputable tour operators like Allyn Pacha Peru Tours on the Lares Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Experienced guides are thoroughly trained in first aid and equipped with essential tools, including oxygen tanks and comprehensive medical kits, to address altitude-related or other health concerns promptly.

In the rare event of a serious situation, emergency evacuation plans are in place to ensure your safety and well-being. These plans are carefully designed to provide swift assistance, whether it involves guiding you back to a lower altitude or arranging transport to the nearest medical facility.
